Review of Azumi (2003) by James H — 18 Dec 2007
The final sequence is a masterpiece of epic swordfighting, with the resulting carnage and destruction used in imaginative and inventive ways. Its unfortunate that the rest of the film doesn't live up to the standard, as the somewhat campy and barely there storyline serves merely to move our titular heroine from one battle to the next.
Its not so bad when the sequences are this entertaining, and Kitamura's direction of them is spot-on. But as anything more than an action film, Azumi sadly fails, and even *as* an action film, it ends up being rather longer than it needs to be and held up by needless interjections.
A pity, as this could have been a great film- as it is, Azumi is entertaining and memorable, but its not something I'd hurry to go back to.
