Review of Away from Her (2007) by Jorge M — 30 Aug 2008
Sarah Polley's directorial debut is certainly one of the best films of 2006. Beautifully shot and with a lovely intimacy, Away from her presents us the complexity of the transformation of a loving couple in dealing with Alzheimer's disease. This awesome Canadian feature is a winner because not only makes us feel the tenderness and love of the character but its adversities, complications and suffering without drowning us in cheap melodrama and unnecessary melancholy.
It takes talent, courage and ambition to be a 28 years old first time director to be able to capture the emotionality, intimacy and humanity of a loving and elderly couple and yet Polley's brilliant direction achieved just that. Excellent!
