Review of Away from Her (2007) by Ian F — 13 Apr 2011
This movie is sweet... so I gave it four stars, when it really is a three and a half star movie. Something felt lacking, I don't know what; but the story was so bittersweet and wonderful I didn't care. Julie Christie gives a great performance that was Golden Globe winner worthy and Oscar nominated worthy- Marion Cottillard was the clear winner now! Gordon Pinsent and the supporting cast were perfect and the music was a match! Polley proves that not only is she a good actor but a good writer and director. And I need to mention how great it is that a movie that was so Canadian, did so well at the Oscars, had bigger named stars and didn't have that overwhelming "Canadian" feel! Good for it!
Or does it? It DOES maintain that Canadian-ness that I left it lacked. It's just masked a bit. And it's so tragic, so sad! All I think is "I hope this isn't me!" And then the ending is heartbreaking!
