Review of Awakenings (1990) by Sara N — 14 Oct 2008
Today I am stuck at home with my sick Will. So, we sit on the couch weighted down by my heavy cabin quilt snuggled up to watch a movie. I choose Awakenings. I have seen this film before many years ago and sort of forgot how amazing it was.
If you have never seen this film, it really is a must see. It is based on a true story set in the summer 1969 about a Dr. Sayer played wonderfully by Robin Williams who just got a new job at an asylum. He starts to work with this specific group of patients who have been in a comatose state for many years do to an encephalitis outbreak (1917-1928). Dr. Sayer finds an experimental drug that was used to treat Parkinson's disease and gets permission to use it on one of his patients named Leonard Lowe (Robert DeNiro). The drug has miraculous results not only waking Leonard from his comatose state but bringing him back to a new world. Leonard was only eleven years old when he slipped into his coma. Lots can change in thirty years so Leonard has to learn how to adapt to this new life and surroundings. Dr. Sayer receives permission to administer the new drug to all of the encephalitis patients. They all wake up and start living the life that they have been missing.
Wonderful feel good movie that you can cry all the way through if you are looking for a great flick. I strongly suggest it. I cried and cried.
