Review of Awakenings (1990) by Walker W — 25 Dec 2008
CONSENSUS: A powerful, tear-inducing film that features a wonderful performance by Williams and a convincing, heart-wrenching one by DeNiro (who, interesting enough, gives another great performance as a completely opposite character in GOODFELLAS of the same year).
The message of living life and appreciating the simple things is transmitted almost perfectly to the audience, riding upon the shoulders of the actors, the emotions they convey, and the beautiful music score.
Oversentimental at times, but easily overlooked or even embraced. Nominated for Best Picture, this was certainly one of the best films of 1990. MY GRADE: A-.
