Review of Awakenings (1990) by Daniel S — 08 Oct 2012
Penny Marshall was never known for lots of visual style, but she sticks to performances and story, and both are good here, its heartbreaking in the beginning to see leonard as a boy losing control of his body, ruth nelson is great as his mother, and deniro does a good job showing all the tics and twitches as an adult, williams is good in one of his dramatic quiet roles, I think he can really pull it off like in good will hunting or one hour photo, kavner is good as the nurse, its real interesting learning about the disease, tho I felt they did rush the recovery process a bit, it seemed to be vegetable to talking and walking over night, I was surprised to see that anton furst, who designed batman, designed this even tho its mainly locations and just a few normal settings but whatevs.
