Review of Awakenings (1990) by Vadim D — 21 Apr 2014
Bolstered by terrific performances from Williams and particularly De Niro, this medical drama really tugs at the heart strings without being overly manipulative. The true story is fascinating and the portrayal of the patients coming out of their comatose state was moving and humourous, having not realized most of them had been catatonic for 30 years.
Robert De Niro really gave it his all here and it goes to show how diverse of an actor he is; the same goes for Robin Williams. There are many touching scenes to this film that will put a lump in your throat and it really makes you reflect on taking things for granted, and the possibility of one day losing it all.
