Review of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) by Jon C — 28 May 2018
18 films, 10 years and $15 billion....
Marvel Studios has done it by delivering possibly their best installment in their long canon.
Iron Man jumpstarted this whole cinematic universe back in 2008 and I like many had no idea it would explode into the successful empire it's become.
I absolutely gobbled up everything in this latest chapter from the many fun character interactions to the action sequences to the tough but well-earned emotions particularly the ending the way it plays out...I mean damn.
64+ characters finally have to the chance to collide and ultimately save the universe from being decimated by their biggest, most formiddable foe.
Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, Groot, Rocket Racoon, Drax, Gamora, Nebula, Mantis, Starlord, War Machine, Black Widow, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Hulk, Vision, Black Panther, Scarlett Witch, the Winter Soldier, Falcon all gather to fend off the ultimate threat.
Thanos was teased at the end of Avengers 1 and now we fully see him in truest, he is from the planet Titan seeking out all of the Infinity Stones for his Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half the universe and he has aid from his children also known as the Black Order; Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, and Cull Obsidian, he actually gets the most backstory out of so many people this movie has to cover in 2 and half hours, you actually understand why he comes off as a bad guy given that his own homeworld was destroyed to resource constraints and over-population, wiping out half the universe in his eyes seems to be the only solution to find true balance, Gamora also has a huge role to play for his plan to work on collecting the rest of the stones.
A lot of stuff here revolves around genocide, failure, losing, sacrifice, like I said before the ending is the most heartbreaking out of everything we've seen so far in the previous films given that several players bite the dust. Now all that remains is what is the next step: how can our heroes recover from the losses they've suffered, has Thanos truly won, and how will the next Avengers film wrap everything up?
The post credits scene luckily still paves the way for newer, future stories which I'm all for.
Until then this is the best MCU film to date with pretty much the finest villain Marvel Studios has put to film from the page, I applaud both directors Joe and Anthony Russo for making the LOTR of comic book films!
