Review of Avatar (2011) by James W — 24 Mar 2014
Pure and utter beauty, never before has a world in a movie been so rich, detailed and vibrant than Avatar. James Cameron's highest grossing masterpiece boasts scale larger than his other highest grossing movie Titanic, and with the size of that movie you'd think it would be impossible to surpass but Avatar does that, taking you to Pandora, exploring the Hallelujah mountains, the seas of Pandora and the vast forests and jungles, all in mouth watering 3D that brings the experience even closer.
I was concerned that all this vivid imagination and world building would flatten any character development or credible story, but my concerns were immediately washed away in the first minutes: You meet Jake Sully, you understand why he's here and who he is, and his condition, and this type of development is true to each and every character from the bossy Grace Augustine to Neytiri, a Pandora resident.
The military are the big bullies threatening to tear up Pandora's land to dig up Unobtanium, a rock worth billions to the right buyer, but Sully's eyes are opened up when he ventures deep into Pandora, and knows that fighting back is the right thing to do.
Running in at a whopping 155 minutes Avatar never misses the mark, delivering full on action, immense scale, tremendous characters melded to the several gorgeous sets and a story that has no holes and flows superbly.
