Review of Avatar (2011) by Hal W — 09 Mar 2014
Maybe I'm just getting old, but billion dollar special effects don't hide cookie-cutter characters, Disney-like plots or indulgent running times. Yes there are ecological and anti-war messages, but they're hardly anything new.
Even the concept of living vicariously through other forms is getting passe now. To be involved in a film I want to be introduced to original and engaging people, rather than being led through hoops in an emotional painting-by-numbers exercise.
Some pretty interesting concept flora and fauna, but it just goes to show that we nowhere near as good at making this stuff up as the original author.
