Review of Avatar (2011) by Kyle K — 20 Jan 2015
Decent visuals. Laugh-out-loud terrible dialogue and insanely cliched characters. People who think this movie is so amazing should really see more movies. I also particularly disliked how Michelle Rodriguez and Giovanni Ribisi were basically written EXACTLY like two of the characters from Cameron's earlier (and much better) movie Aliens.
How predictable was this movie? If you don't know what's going to happen within the first 30 minutes, you might actually be dead. I also HATED all the lines by the main villain. Here are a few of the cliche-ridden ones I specifically remembered: "You are not in Kansas anymore," (wow, never heard that one in any other movie), "I want to be home for dinner," (am I supposed to be laughing here?), "Let's boogie," (you're a military man, not one of the BeeGees), and "Come to Papa," (another original line that isn't at all ridiculous...).
Another bit of goofy cliche: the "let's battle" speech. When a group of people watch their families get butchered, do they really need a cheesy speech to make them want revenge (which, by the way, pretty much goes against what their whole culture stands for. I mean, they weren't exactly praying over the fallen soldiers like they did for the animals they killed).
I also think Sam Worthington is just the worst. First he was dull and boring in Terminator: Salvation. Now he's dull and boring in this movie. He's had quite a successful year considering that he never showed any emotions in any of his performances.
Yeah, the visuals were fine and deserving of some of their praise, but in this case, they weren't enough to make me enjoy a nearly-three-hour movie full of bad acting and lame writing. Hate on Titanic all you want, this is Cameron's worst movie.
