Review of Avatar (2011) by Tim W — 03 Feb 2018
I'm sorry, but even in this fatuous age looks will only get you so far if you've got nothing to say. Retrospectively, this has come in for some revisionist bile with accusations of racism and such.
But it really isn't even that philosophically profound to engage with issues in any meaningful way. It's visually sumptuous as expected a la James Cameron. Similarly, it's way over long a la James Cameron.
But it's dull beyond belief. Shortened and simplified, it could have been a great kids film. Fortunately, Saldana, Worthington and Riblisi have all gone on to make fabulous stuff. Sigourney Weaver never got the part her early promise deserved but she's a class act in a below par film, which kind of sums up her career post-Alien.
The Hurt Locker cleaned up at the Oscars when this was expecting to. It kind of sums it all up.
