Review of Avalon (2001) by Richard B — 29 Nov 2007
A surreal experience, this film is part virtual-reality sci-fi and part opera... yes, you read that right! Visually it is absolutely stunning and it is hard to believe that such incredible production values were made with what was obviously a limited budget.
Even more so, the fact that director Mamoru Oshii filmed this in Polish rather than his native Japanese, is something of a jaw dropper. The film does seem to drag at certain points in favor of stylistic visuals (a trait of Oshii) but otherwise it is a truly unique experience.
If you enjoyed Oshii's "Ghost In The Shell" (or the more akin to this film "Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence") then you will likely have a lot of fun with this film.
