Review of Avalon (2001) by Eugen P — 15 Jan 2008
On the surface Avalon is not as deep philosophically when compared to some of Oshii's animated films, namely Ghost in the Shell 1 and 2, but it is almost if not just as important. In fact many elements of this film made their way into Ghost in the Shell 2:Innocence a few years later.
The effects are not on par with the latest from Hollywood but they are very well done and are a perfect fit within the storyline. The film is a visual combination of the older Polish films that Oshii is a fan of and modern anime.
The American release was sadly butchered, you may feel compelled to turn the subtitles off occasionally while watching it. Long beautiful takes have useless and poorly written text narration over them on the domestic DVD.
