Review of Autumn Sonata (1978) by Soheil R — 26 Dec 2007
Yet another Bergman title that I can whole-heartedly back as one of the greatest films of all time. Let's look at the fact sheet: the world's greatest director (Bergman) teams up with the world's greatest cinematographer (Nykvist) to direct two of the world's greatest screen actresses (Ullman & Bergman).
It's an extended shouting match with gorgeous, lush visuals -- a combination of the director's two towering works (Scenes from a Marriage and Fanny & Alexander). When Liv tears down Ingrid's self-absorbed mother, the sight is as breathtaking and cathartic as anything in Bergman's catalogue.
