Review of Automata (2014) by Salgood S — 10 Oct 2014
It's a bit sketched out in terms of character development beyond the lead and the machines, Dylan McDermott is a cartoon for sure. All the bad guys are over the top clowns. But it was smart in its world building and as a kind of theatrical set piece I enjoyed it. Quite a bit in fact.
It was great for a low budget sci fi film. Made at $15,000,000 for the production! I was pleasantly surprised going in with low expectations.
Indeed it reminded me of the kind of story and characters common to the 80s sci-fi of Moebius, Enki Bilal & etc. Some smart design work.
The budget shows but they use it to their advantage. Nice work Gabe Ibáñez and co, I'll be watching for your next thing. Just watch you're tropes!
