Review of Auto Focus (2002) by Mec R — 10 Mar 2008
Auto Focus is the story of Bob Crane, the superstar of the Hogan's Heroes tv show, who led a very dark life as a sex addict. It makes for an interesting bio pic, and the actor who portrays him, Greg Kinnear is quite amazing in this role. Willem Dafoe also shines as his partner in crime, and both deliver a creepiness to this role that I am sure only scratches the surface of the world their characters live in.
Overall, I was impressed with the sets and costumes in this film-everything was quite tight, what failed to impress me was Bob Crane himself. It is hard to watch a film about a character who you cannot sympathize with or for. He is a sociopath who is really quite disgusting as a human being. Perhaps not as bad as some, but definately not the type of person who inspires.
The film wasn't all bad, but failed to keep my interest throughout, which I think is just as much a problem with the subject as it is with the scripting. I am not so sure that Shakespeare could have penned this in such a way that I would like Bob Crane or want to be exposed to 90 minutes of his life's story...
