Review of Auto Focus (2002) by William M — 23 Feb 2015
This memorable bio-pic of sex-addicted Hogan's Heroes star Bob Crane features beguiling performances from Greg Kinnear and Willem Dafoe, but Paul Schrader's dour, didactic direction combines with the already dark subject matter to create a viewing experience both graphic and grim.
Like a clumsy Addie Bundren, Schrader uses images of addiction to condemn Crane's addiction to images, almost as if daring the audience to likewise denounce his film. I took him up on it. Rent it--at your own peril.
