Review of Australia (2008) by Sharat G — 24 Jul 2010
After Moulin Rouge, everybody was waiting for Baz Luhrmann's next installment, and when Australia came out, the critic and fan opinions were divided. Australia was supposed to be a big hit, nominations for oscars, praise everywhere, mag premieres, etc... From that perspective, the movie failed big time, and couldn't achieve what it was meant to. The biggest problem was that it was painfully long, and the plot simply wasn't strong enough to fill a 3 hour movie.
If analysed from the opposed perspective, we will still be able to find tons of positives about Australia, beginning with the very good performances of Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, to the beautiful soundtrack, and the brilliant scenery. But just because the movie is nearly three hours long with a good soundtrack and art direction will it be considered as an epic.
It's far from that actually, but it's still a good film.
