Review of Australia (2008) by The Critic ( — 08 Apr 2012
Whilst Baz Luhrmann's epic love story doesn't always quite work on all levels (there are moments when the story is too preachy and the CGI isn't always convincing), the writer/director's film successfully takes viewers on a journey that is as fun as it is dramatic, and as romantic as it is tragic.
Nicole Kidman shines in the lead role (she is given free range to stretch her comedic legs at the beginning of the piece to great effect) and wide-eyed Brandon Walters is absolutely captivating, leaving not much for Hugh Jackman to do; despite an interesting back story, his contribution doesn't penetrate as well as his aforementioned co-stars.
Unnecessarily overlong - the film has been plotted to run for 100 minutes with a 59-minute epilogue - 'Australia' is nonetheless a charming, visually spectacular picture.
