Wasn't sure what to expect from this film since it wasnt a musical. Baz's direction in the beginning is much like his other films: quick cuts, quickly moving the story along - almost disjointedly.

Once the prologue is over, then the film gets going... and boy does it! Its long; doesnt feel long, but you are aware of it. There are three separate acts? if you will -sort of makes it feel like a three-part TV mini-series (cept that its acted, directed and produced much better than any TV movie).

The acts are good in themselves but it sometimes can feel like the ending of Lord of the Rings; The Return of the King. Cinematography and the score are breathtaking; the direction and acting is on spot.

Loved the Wizard of Oz references/on-going theme. Not to spoil anyone, the young boy is the common thread that ties the storylines together and that is what the heart of the film really is. See this film -great date flick!
