Review of Austenland (2013) by Laura T — 21 Feb 2014
It could have been better, but it wasn't terrible. First and probably foremost, the humor just didn't work half the time. They were trying and missing the mark. I'm not sure if it was the acting (although the two leads were flawless) or the timing.
Certainly the dialogue could have been stepped up a notch; Austen's legacy is wittiness as much as romance. I just felt...awkward throughout many parts. It was a little like the play they perform: almost funny, thrown together, and nigh unto incomprehensible.
But the costumes and cinematography are fabulous and the ending satisfactorily heartwarming.
