Review of August: Osage County (2013) by Wife Of T — 17 Jun 2014
This is a brilliantly acted powerhouse of a film. But what makes it really great is that, while we (my husband and I) could see echoes of our own family here (both sides), we were so happy to spend time with a family more messed up than ours.
And this family is reeeealy messed up. We begin with an introduction to Violet (played impeccably by Meryl Streep) who's strung out on pills. I mean - completely strung out. So much so that she can barely stand and form coherent sentences. But that's "OK" since her husband's a complete lush, spouting poetry while downing hard liquor.
Throw in past family trauma, "inappropriate" family relations, suicide, lots of anger (pent up and suppressed) with a dash of violence (the shovel people) and you have a spicy soup that would keep anyone wide awake.
My husband and I saw this one twice... you should see it at least once.
And remember films are expensive, take a nap before it starts,.
Wife of the sleepy husband.
