Review of Audition (2000) by Meshell S — 06 Feb 2010
Watched this horror movie this week. I had hear about how gory it was and was sort of surprised as I sat through the first hour and a half and the only thing gory was the type used for the subtitles.
The last 30 minutes though made me understand why I had seen in many forums how folks added this to their "top gory movies" list although after seeing Inside and Martyrs I didn't find it to be as gory as folks found back in '99.
But if you just look at this movie as a typical horror movie, then I think you aren't giving it what it deserves. In fact, I would say if you are a fan of movies (especially those that are cerebral), then this is the movie for you. Even if you don't like the horror genre, you can look past it to see an incredibly deep movie that just happens to have violence.
So, if you appreciate Japanese movies and want something that you will have to think about, this is your movie. If you want something gory, move to the next one and watch Hostel II or Dora the Explorer.
