Review of Audition (2000) by Navsangeet S — 24 Jul 2010
Takashi Miike knows his stuff. He's is quite simply one of the best horror movie directors of his time. Shiina is just so awesome too. When she's saying "kiri kiri" during the needle sticking scenes, she says it so affectionately that you almost want her to do it.
It's repulsive but you want it anyway. Ishibashi is alright too but the focus is on Shiina. That's despite the fact that we see her far less than Ishibashi. As for the movie, like I've said a number of times, one of the things it does so superbly is waiting in the dark.
For almost three-quarters of the movie, you don't get to see anything, if you only consider the horror part of horror movie. Then it begins. Well, saying so would be an understatement. It comes out of no-f*cking-where, stabs you in your heart with a 12'' hunting knife, twists the knife, bludgeons you to a pulp and disappears.
I won't go into the other themes portrayed by this movie (were they? O_o), like objectification of women etc etc etc, because let's face it, I'm actually pretty happy watching the gorefest; thank you.
Should not be missed by any horror film aficionado and it should definitely be in your collection if you call yourself one.
