Part exposition the movie, part mystery, part surreal dream, and part torture film. Audition is certainly a different film, one that is indeed extremely disturbing. I can't say I liked it. Most people refer to this as the most intense torture porn film ever made, but that part only comes in during the last 20 minutes of the film, but the film is an hour 50 minutes in total.
Yes, that part is very intense and fucked up...but that's not what you're really supposed to get out of this film, and there's even the hint that the torture porn part may only be an intense dream.
The film in reality is about a man coping with the loss of his beloved wife and his contemplation of re-marrying and how that affects his mind and thought process.
