Review of Audition (2000) by Beesix A — 09 Feb 2013
Not scary, but exploitative and gross? Yes. From the pedophilic back story to the pitifully fake romantic manipulation Asami perpetrates on Yoshikawa. You'd think that a woman whose entire life revolves around convincing mealymouthed letches to fall in love with her wouldn't be so transparent, but I guess viewers are supposed to believe Yoshikawa is really that desperate.
We also have to contend with the fractured dreamscape aspect of storytelling so favored by Asian horror films, which is quite annoying and distracting. Finally, the ending which doesn't make much sense.
Is it all a dream? Who cares at this point.
