Review of Audition (2000) by Damjan R — 01 May 2014
Featuring some unsettling elements & interesting visual choices, this film is uneven in story and in acting. The scares are well executed and what's more interesting, they are rooted in character psychology which is always a plus in the horror genre.
The story takes too long to get going and has some clumsy solutions amid the more creative ones. The direction makes great use of color for ambiance, but the camera work is less than stellar. The acting is somewhat subdued even for an Asian film.
While it borrows from horror extensively, this is essentially a drama, and as that it's rather plot light, in addition to being poorly paced through almost 2/3 of the film. Recommended for it's unsettling vibe & an interesting story (despite largely being poorly executed).
