Review of Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) by Riley H — 23 Aug 2007
One of the best movies ever made, and also one of the most heartbreaking, Louis Malle's painfully personal telling of a tragic year in his childhood is like one giant open emotional wound. Gene Siskel described it as something like "a long slow march into Hell", and that seems to fit perfectly.
It spirals downward from happiness to inescapable despair so effectively and realistically that it is unforgettable. One of the finest WWII dramas you'll ever see.
