Review of Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) by Laurence M — 16 Oct 2008
I liked the story, though by the end I wondered if Malle was capitalizing a little on the Holocaust to add emotion to the story. Anyway, I thought it was compelling though the ending was a little overdone and predictable.
The cinematography needed some restraint: the camera was in love with color at the expense of verisimilitude: if the scenes in the sleeping quarters were supposed to be at night, were the boys lost at night also? Hard to tell.
And the lipstick and rouge was a little heavily applied to the boys.
