Review of Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) by Nate W — 25 Aug 2009
It's admirable that Louis Malle underplays this tragic tale of lost childhood. He eschews nostalgia, the overspill of sentimentality flowing out of many cloying coming-of-age movies - and it's more remarkable for that. This haunting elegy to ignorance, guilt and misspent youth is at times dark and mostly moving in a very quiet, tactful way.
RATING: A-.
