Review of Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) by Rod A — 28 Mar 2009
Part plain narrative, part meditation, Balthazar (the donkey) and Marie (the girl) reflect each other's struggle to survive. On the face of it, we are watching a summary of two beings' lives. We see both beautiful and traumatic moments.
By merely witnessing these stories, we feel they are a kind of template for our own lives. Bresson helps us absorb the chaos, pain and peace of living. This is not a feel-good film. It is striving to understand why we are here at all.
