Review of Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) by Michael A — 07 Oct 2009
Bresson creates a spiritually enthralling masterpiece, pretty much an allegory of life through the eyes of a donkey called Balthazar,& its journey through the harsh reality. It's amazing cause Bresson picks the donkey as a symbol of saintliness, simply innocent, and how its relationship with Marie being developed is simply magical, yet Bresson still manages to make Marie look without emotion at all, maybe because he intended to show Balthazar as the only symbol of purity.
Ah, and don't expect to be spoon-fed with typical tear jerker moments from this movie. One of the best film to see the essential point of humanity, much better than what'll you get nowadays. And what's great is the duration, which is only 1 and a half hour, short but completely worth it !
