Review of Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) by Stephen S — 16 Feb 2011
Not as good as I remember it from back in the day, but then again, nothing could surpass that level. I was obsessed with this film when it came out, and I used to watch it at least once a day with I was like 12.
Looking back, it's aged pretty well, and is still a thoroughly enjoyable film. What really makes Atlantis fun to watch is all of its characters: almost every character is interesting or funny, and sometimes both.
Even the ones that aren't engrossing are still cool to watch, which is very rare for a film, particularly Disney films, since they often try to dumb characters down for the sake of entertaining children (which is understandable, but it also makes films seem more aged and sometimes less engaging when you rewatch them as an older and wiser individual).
I'm not saying that Atlantis isn't devoid of one-liners and childish jokes, but honestly, they work a lot better than you'd think. All in all, this is still one of my favorite (and one of the most underrated) of the Disney films.
Definitely check this out if you like Disney or are interested in this film, even in the slightest/.
