Review of Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2002) by Niloo R — 21 Jul 2014
This film depicted a very specific culture and was aimed at a very narrow demographic. while interesting on an anthropological level, it lacked the archetypal storytelling that make stories from around the world universal.
the acting and character development was also very poorly done, to the point that I didn't know which character was which. it was very difficult for me to follow, let alone care about what was going on.
the film was also visually unappealing, and felt more like a low-budget tv documentary than anything else. I know that the story wanted to depict and old inuit legend, but everything from the choice of characters to the style of filmmaking hindered its accessibility to a global audience.
maybe people of inuit descent who are familiar with its customs and legends will enjoy this film, but I certainly didn't.
