Review of At the Earth's Core (1976) by Jacob G — 30 Mar 2010
I love me a good pulp adventure story and this one this one, based on the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, is quite fun and nostalgic. "At the Earth's Core" is similar to films like "The Land that Time Forgot" and novels like Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with one major flaw: an aw factor. Sorry, but a rubber-suit monster mash in the late 70's just doesn't cut it considering the mind blowing effects already showcased in earlier films like King Kong and anything by Harryhausen.
One thing that needs to be said, as it brings about most of the film's humor (though unintentionally) is the character of Dr. Abner Perry. It is hysterical watching Peter Cushing, better known for his performance in the 1977 film "Star Wars" as the infamous villain, Grand Moff Tarkin, portray this turn of the century gratuitously proper and bumbling idiot doctor. He almost made the film worthwhile. Almost.
