Review of At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991) by Jax B — 22 Mar 2008
A solid work - so many strong points. The characters are weak and vulnerable. Their human characteristics are as off putting as they are realistic. There are moments of hope as well as disappointment. The scenery is spectacular and the soundtrack is eerie and highly evocative of the landscape, for all its classical instruments.
The tensions between Catholic and Protestant are strong and interesting to watch play out - despite its Protestant perspective it seems to be pro Catholic, if indeed it can be said to be pro any sort of evangelistic activities.
Anyways - good conflict movie. Going to check out The Mission next.
