Review of At Close Range (1986) by Carlos Z — 13 Jun 2009
One of the few movies that starts off crap and remains so for much of its duration, then suddenly blossoms into brilliance and stays so until the end. I had given up on this and was thinking of switching off, when suddenly it found several extra gears.
In the former part of the movie, it was plain boring, seeming contrived and pointless. The acting was bland, especially by Christopher Walken's high standards.
In the latter part, it suddenly got gritty, intriguing and unpredictable. Sean Penn and Christopher Walken shone.
The one constant in the movie is not a good one. How many times can you play bars from the same song over and over and not expect people to be irritated? Well, that's what happened here. The entire score seems to consist of Madonna's "Live to Tell".
