Review of Astro Boy (2009) by Mark B — 08 Jul 2011
Astro Boy - Underrated and overlooked flop.
What a shame. All in all, Astro Boy wasn't so bad. It was a pretty fun sci-fi action CG kids movie. The animation was surprisingly pretty good and the voice acting was more than sufficient (thank you, Donald Sutherland).
There were so many elements that I'd seen in other movies before: I Robot, AI, even Spider-Man that I was a little bit disappointed with the story line. Sure, it's essentially a superhero origin story. We have to go through the trials: how he was built, how he comes to terms with his powers, and finally who he has to overcome to be praised as a hero. This is all terribly cliche.
That's the only negative comment I can say. If I was between the ages of 5 and 12, none of that would matter at all. The movie is fast paced, funny, fun, and just cool to look at. We have to give credit where its due.
I expected this movie to be terrible truthfully. And I don't think it was. It's nowhere near as good as Monsters vs. Aliens or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but it was a lot of fun to watch.
