Review of Asterix and Cleopatra (1968) by Jacob B — 07 Aug 2018
A huge improvement over the last movie. Asterix and Cleopatra isn't void of flaws: voice acting that doesn't match the designs in the English dub in my opinion, ESPECIALLY Edifis (he sounds like an old Patrick Star) and notable padding (the Dutch dub cut out that trippy "When You're Eating Well, You're Well") but it still has higher production values than the Asterix the Gaul.
The animation is more detailed and they actually bothered to animate characters walking in different directions though the character models all look like they've come from different movies, most notably the pirates and the songs are fun despite having no effect on the plot.
The most notable thing however is that it knew what it was: a movie, first and foremost. It remains faithful to its source material whilst still adding enough necessary changes to make it more of a movie.
Especially since Gaul was just the original comic in "movie" form. Asterix and Cleopatra is a good adaptation of one of Asterix's greatest adventures.
