Review of Ask Me Anything (2014) by The Melancholic Alcoholic — 10 Mar 2015
*** MASSIVE SPOILERS ***.
A gutless movie with an overly cautious lead, with an chickenhearted twist ending that NO ONE sees coming because it's soooo ridiculous The writer basically forgot to connect the last 3 minutes with the whole of the movie.
The ending ruined the movie, not because it's so gross and "shocking" or "haunting" or "creepy", but because it turned a movie that was clearly a coming of age drama, into some sort of thriller.
Sure, we know about switching genres, but with for example Fight Club, there are clues, and it totally makes sense. Let's take Dirty Pretty Things (2002), there it happens in the middle, and it's not really a genre switcher.
But Ask me Anything is for 1 hour and 35 minutes actually a social drama, and in the last 3 minutes it turns into a run of the mill icky thriller, in 2 seconds flat, without ANY indication. The ending therefor is very cheap. Both, because it goes to from something with a message to something extremely superficial, and because there's literally not a lot of sense in it.
This film had the chance to make a powerful statement on abortion, but it gave way to the current conservative climate in Hollywood, and perhaps the writers need for greed.
Only positive thing about the film is that Robertson looks really hot. She basically hasn't changed her face since she was 16. She does have this total petite blond hotness, and she could, at 23 easily pass for 12, her boyish butt is just that tiny. But yeah, her 5.2 seconds of nudity tell us she's a cowardly or perhaps not a brave actress. Johanson, Polley, Michelle Williams: They've all were brave about nudity. I get that for American actresses, nudity is a big deal still, and it's something that takes you to the next level. Robertson is a coward in the vein of Will Smith who, in his only really good dramatic rol, refused to PLAY-ACT kiss another man! That sort of lily liveredness should not be rewarded. And it won't. If she doesn't take more risks with her career, she gonna be ingenue for 15 years, and then play housewifes on a sit com.
And winning Nashville ..... that's more an insult, it's like being a Sears Roebuck model.
