Review of Ashes and Diamonds (1958) by Patrick K — 06 Sep 2007
As a Polish person living in America, this film is close to me as somebody whos parents come from that nation. Andrzej Wajda's best film and a perfect way to end his "War Trilogy". With beautiful cinematography and an exceptional cast, it has risen up to be one of the finest films to come out of Europe. Zbigniew Cybulski (Pronounced Zz-big-niev S-bool-ski) excels as Maciek Chelmicki, the questioning firebrand, and is quite possibly the finest performance from any Polish actor. Some have said it's a dated film, but if you think about it, it's not. Maciek character represents the future and the decisions we make. In this film, it's the future of a post-war Poland. Wonderfully ambigous ending that rubbed it's nose at the censors (Wajda said that the ending pleased the censors, but got the people questioning the Communist government).
The best Polish film ever.
