Review of As Above, So Below (2014) by Greg B — 01 Sep 2014
"As Above/So Below" is a found footage horror film that explores the idea of the gates of Hell being housed a thousand feet below the streets of Paris. It's not the worst idea for a horror film in the world, but it is easier to make this concept come to life than on paper.
The director does not do an effective job carrying this concept to fruition. The first half of the film is pretty ok, but then it devolves into found footage cliché "hell" (no pun intended).
By the end of the film, it becomes as derivative as any found footage film. It goes to show that the found footage genre is a dying one and has gotten so cliché-ridden that it's almost better for filmmakers to shy away from this over-treaded ground.
While the actors do serviceable jobs, there is nothing meaningful about the characters or their individual stories. They are simply there to be immersed in cave porn. I was extremely disappointed with how this film sold out at the end, so don't come into this film expecting anything that original --------------------------------- C.
