Review of As Above, So Below (2014) by Azeem H — 06 Jun 2015
As Above So Below refers to the words etched on the door on entry to hell, yes hell. It starts with an intriguing set up with the main character looking for the philosopher's stone, it's not in England it's in Paris. It's apparently underneath the catacombs of Paris which were built because the French complained of the stink the dead bodies were making back in olden times.
So we get cliched, some very annoying characters and some who are there just to make up the numbers, what can go wrong does go wrong and then it tries to get you to think was that really the hell or just some sort of hallucinations.
Honestly this film started off intriguing but then just descended quickly into absurd horror as they try to convince you this is hell and you have to fight your personal demons to escape it.
The film lacked any sort of humour, I mean seriously not one Harry Potter reference, from people who are not treasure hunting geeks.
Overall very disappointing though it will no doubt increase French Tourism, the only thing that it's probably good for.
