Review of Art School Confidential (2006) by Ben G — 20 Mar 2009
Starts out somewhat pedestrian but gets very interesting once art school begins. The pretentious and naive artist archetypes are perfect, particularly John Malkovich's egocentric but untalented teacher.
Unfortunately, the movie is ultimately derailed by an extremely silly serial killer subplot, which eventually takes over as the focal point and overshadows the best ideas. I understand the purpose of the ending (the only way to surely become a known artist is to sacrifice your innocence), but surely there could have been a way to make the same point without losing focus.
