Review of Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) by Wendy B — 12 Jan 2009
Ok, anything with Cary Grant has to be worth watching, but putting my huge fat bias aside, this is a great movie. All in all, the movie's really made by the two aunts and Jonathon, the Frankenstein-ish (well, to be facetious Frankenstein's monster-ish) brother of Mortimer, played by Cary.
He does an ok job - for most of it he just has to look shocked and splutter a lot - but he does it well! I felt the age of it showed a bit with Mortimer's treatment of poor Elaine, completely ignoring her calls for explanations/help.
But in the end the movie is too delightful to hold that against it. Great plot, great characters, great acting.
