Review of Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) by Danny R — 30 Dec 2011
A hilarious madcap classic farce brilliantly directed by Frank Capra, in which Cary Grant delivers one of the best comedic performances of his amazing career, he plays Mortimer Brewster a famous dramatic critic and nephew of two sweet seemingly harmless old ladies played with a great droll wit by Josephine Hull and Jean Adair, who's mission of mercy is to poison with elderberry wine lonely old gentlemen callers who have no family and are all alone in the world.
He also has a brother who thinks that he is president Teddy Roosevelt superbly played by John Alexander and another brother who is a homicidal maniac and looks like Boris Karloff, chillingly played by Raymond Massey and his partner Dr.
Einstein played by Peter Lorre who absolutely priceless as a macabre plastic surgeon, Priscilla Lane delivers a delightful performance as Brewster's impatient new bride. There are outstanding supporting performances by Jack Carson, Edward Everett Horton and James Gleason.
A classic film from a American master Frank Capra. Highly Recommended.
