Review of Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) by Gavin S — 04 Jul 2014
This is a ridiculous and sometimes hilarious film, based on the stage play. Expanded to film by the great Frank Capra, Cary Grant excels here as Mortimer Brewster, who discovers all kinds of secrets (and bodies)his sweet old aunts are hiding inside.
On top of it, his brother Teddy thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt, and his older brother Jonathan shows up with Peter Lorre in tow and a body count of his own. All Mortimer wants is to get out with his new bride Elaine, but thinks the insanity in his family is going to catch up with him.
If you feel like some light entertainment on the mad-cap screwball side, this is the one for you.
