Review of Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) by Ryan M — 20 Jul 2010
"I'm not a Brewster, I'm the son of a sea-cook!" I wonder what the cab fare was? I liked this movie better than the more well known Frank Capra films, "It's a wonderful life".
Again, my formula for my list of favorites, great old film with a superb cast. "Cary Grant, Elsa Lancaster, Peter Lorre, Raymond Massey (with more makeup than he had with Young Abe Lincoln), and the man known for his cartoon voices, Edward Everette Horton (Fractured Fairy Tales on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show to name just one).
My favorite dialogue was Peter Lorre in the dark, then lights a match..."Where am I?...Where am I?...(lights match) Oh, here I am.) Comic genius and comic timing. Plot line, Old ladies invite elderly gentlemen over to their home, then poison them.
Insane son who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt buries them in the cellar, second son is a serial murderer, along with his "igor-esque" accomplice disposes of their latest victim in the cellar of the spinsters.
Oh, did I forget to mention...it's a comedy! Is it dark? Is cement thick? But it's very funny.
