The minute Colonel Weber absurdly & implausibly assumed that the Dr. would be able to translate Heptapodese (i.e. Alien) - after all she had translated some Farsi for the military in to past - and she actually has to explain to the annoying guy why, um, this might be different, I was ready to bail and the film never redeemed itself.
More silly behavior & dialogue followed - usually involving the Colonel who was an utter tool and I fought to stay with it all the way to its mawkish " all the world unites" end. Pretentious is another word that comes to mind.
